What Content gap does#
Content Gap (under Competition in the left menu, directly under Backlinks) compares your domain with several competitors (how many depends on your plan: Free 3, Solo 5, Business 5, Pro 10, Agency 10) and lists keywords that bring them traffic while you rank poorly or not at all. It is the fastest way to find topics your site is missing.
Rankfinity compares by traffic: for each competitor it takes the keywords that bring that site the most visits, then checks where you rank for exactly those keywords. This keeps the list about real, valuable searches — not every obscure keyword a large site happens to rank for.
Running a comparison#
- Open Content Gap.
- Your domain is filled from the project. Change it if needed.
- Add competitors in the Competitors fields. Not sure who they are? Click Find competitors (sites ranking for the same keywords as you) or Find by keywords (sites ranking for keywords you name). Your own domain and big platforms are left out of the suggestions.
- The option Also check which keywords fit my site is ticked. It checks each keyword against your site's topic and is included in the price.
- Click Compare. The price is on the button and depends on how many competitors you add.
Reading the results#
The header says how many keywords were found and how many remain after filters, for example "581 total · 120 after filters".
Each row is one keyword:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Keyword | The search term |
| Volume | Monthly searches |
| Competitors | How many of your competitors rank for it |
| Their traffic | Estimated visits the competitors get from it |
| You | Your position, or an explanation if you don't rank |
| One column per competitor | Their position and the page that ranks |
An empty competitor cell means "not in this competitor's top keywords by traffic", not "does not rank at all".
Pages are shown readable (decoded), and the link opens the real page.
Filters (free)#
Filters work on the data you already fetched, so changing them costs nothing:
- Position — show keywords where a competitor ranks at least this high. Default: top 20.
- Ranked by at least 1 / 2 / 3 competitors — keywords several competitors share are safer bets.
- Hide brand and navigational searches — on by default. Removes searches for a competitor's brand name and "go to a specific site" searches, which you cannot win.
- Hide off-topic — hides keywords the topic check marked as not fitting your site. Off by default, so you can review them first.
Sort by any column. Export CSV saves the filtered list.
Low-overlap competitors#
Each competitor chip shows its overlap with you, for example "overlap 4%". When overlap is very low, the chip says "low overlap — consider removing". That site is probably not a real competitor (a marketplace or a news site), and it fills the list with keywords that do not fit you. Remove it and compare again.
Turning the list into action#
- Filter to Ranked by at least 2 competitors and top 10.
- Sort by Their traffic.
- For each promising keyword, open the competitor's page to see what they wrote.
- Group the keywords into topics. One page should usually cover a topic, not a single keyword.
- Create the page with the Content writer, or improve an existing page.
- Add the main keywords to Rank tracking to see the effect.
Tips#
- Pick competitors your size. Comparing a local service business with a national directory gives you thousands of keywords you cannot win.
- Re-run every few months. Competitors publish new pages and the gap changes.
- Combine with Competitors › Organic competitors to choose who to compare against (Competitors).
Common questions#
Why are there fewer keywords than I expected? The comparison uses each competitor's top keywords by traffic, and the default filters hide brand searches and positions beyond 20. Loosen the filters to see more.
Why does a strange keyword appear? Usually because one broad competitor ranks for it. Check the competitor chip for "low overlap" and remove that competitor, or turn on Hide off-topic.
Is the topic check extra? No, it is included in the price of Compare.
What does "not among your top 1000" mean in the You column? In rare cases your exact positions could not be looked up, so we checked your top 1000 keywords instead and the keyword was not among them.
Can I compare more than five competitors? No. Five keeps the comparison focused and the price predictable.
