# Content writer

> How to research a keyword, build an outline, draft an article, optimise it with the live score and terms, add images, and publish to WordPress.

## What the Content writer does

**Content writer** (under On-page in the left menu) helps you write a page that can compete with the current top results for a keyword. It works in five steps: **research → outline → draft → optimise → publish**. You can stop at any step and write the rest yourself.

## The article list

The list shows every article in the project: title, keyword (+N secondary keywords), target URL, created and saved dates, language flag, content score, words, competition and volume from the research, and your current rank for the keyword.

- Status chips with counts: **Draft**, **In progress**, **Ready to publish**, **Published**, **Archived**.
- Search, choose columns, page through, **Export CSV**.
- **Archive** hides an article; restore it from Archived. Permanent delete is only possible from Archived.

## 1. Create and research

1. Click **New article**.
2. Enter the keyword. Language and location come from the project; the language is suggested from the keyword's script.
3. Choose the length (Auto = the competitors' typical length, or a fixed number of words), a template (Auto, how-to, list, comparison, pillar, FAQ, review, local service page), tone and audience.
4. Click **Research the top results**. The price is on the button, with "Takes about N minutes".

Research reads the top results (up to 30 pages) with Rankfinity's crawler and collects: the terms competitors use and how often, their headings, typical length and structure, "People also ask" questions and related searches. If you track the keyword and the stored results page is recent, research reuses it at a lower price and says so.

The new article's keyword is added to [Rank tracking](/docs/rank-tracking) for free (no scan), so you can follow its position.

### If pages could not be read

Some sites block crawlers or need JavaScript. If none could be read, the score says "not measured" and the panel explains why for each page. **Retry reading · free** tries again with our crawler. **Run the research again** fetches new results (paid).

## 2. The outline

The outline is a list of points (H2 sections, H3s folded under them), each with a target word count and a one-line "what it covers":

- Drag to reorder (or use ↑/↓), switch a point off (it stays but is not written or paid), delete, rename in place.
- **+ Add a point**.
- **Regenerate this point** — replaces one point with a heading or question competitors cover and you don't. Free.
- **Add must-use terms to the outline · free**.
- **More options** — tone, audience, FAQ, image slots, keywords to include.

The price of the draft is based on the words of the points that are switched on: 250 credits for every started 500 words, so a 1,500-word article costs 750 credits. Content writer is part of every plan; you pay only with credits.

## 3. The draft

Click **Write the article · N credits**. The draft is written section by section in the article's language, following the outline, length and terms. You see "Elapsed 0:42 · usually about …". When it is done, a card lists the keywords included.

## 4. The editor and the score

The editor has a full toolbar: undo/redo, find in text, highlight terms, paragraph and heading styles, alignment, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, links, anchors, image blocks, lists, tables, text colour, quotes, HTML view, Markdown paste and export, full screen and zoom. Pasted text is cleaned. Changes save automatically.

### Content score (0–100)

The half-circle on the right updates as you type. Colours run from red to green; a trophy marks the competitors' average on the same scale. Below it: Title, Headings and Terms percentages.

The score needs terms from research. Without them it says "not measured" rather than a misleading number.

### Panels

- **Term coverage** — each term as a chip "term N / min–max": green in range, grey when missing, orange when overused. Hints say "add 2 more times" or "remove 1 use". Basic and Extended groups, tabs for Headings, Article and Entities. Click a term to find it in the text. **Copy missing terms**.
- **Refine terms with AI** (paid) — groups word forms and spellings, marks must-use terms. If your keyword looks misspelled compared with what competitors write, the panel tells you.
- **Keywords** — main and secondary keywords with Title/H1/H2/Text ticks. **Suggest keywords · free** from related searches, Rank tracking and Search Console. Each secondary keyword can be researched (paid) to add its terms and questions.
- **Meta** — title and description with pixel width, Google preview on desktop and mobile, and **Suggest** (free).
- **Words** — your count against the competitors' range.
- **Structure** — H1, H2/H3, an intro that answers early, short paragraphs, list, table where needed, FAQ, schema, and a warning for prices you have not verified.
- **AI optimization** — seven checks that help AI answers quote you (answer first, FAQ, lists or tables, short paragraphs, questions in headings, schema).
- **Content statistics** — readability (English), length, headings, bold, images, links, paragraphs, lists and tables against the competitors.
- **Outline** tab — competitors' headings (add any to your outline), smart headings, questions.
- **Schema** — Article, FAQPage, HowTo or Service markup generated from your text, with Copy.

**Improve score** (paid) rewrites up to three weak sections.

## Images

Each image slot shows a description, alt text, file name and placement. **Generate image · N credits** creates one image; **Generate all images** creates all missing images for one price. Edit or remove slots freely.

## History

**History** keeps versions of the text (saved automatically, at most every few minutes, and always before a draft, Improve or Restore). Preview any version, **Restore** it, or **Compare** two versions word by word. Free.

## Import and export

- **Import ▾** — From URL (reads a page, its main text, headings and images), From WordPress, Raw HTML or Markdown. Choose "Add to the end" or "Replace my text". Free.
- **Export ▾** — Copy HTML, download .html (with schema) or .md.

## Publish to WordPress

Click **Publish to WordPress** (connect your site once: type the address, press **Connect with WordPress** and approve in your WordPress):

- Choose **Draft**, **Publish now** or **Schedule** (in the site's time zone).
- Title, slug, meta description, featured image (the first generated image), categories and tags (add new ones with **+ Add**).
- Optionally upload imported external images to the Media Library.

Publishing again **updates** the same post. A live post cannot be turned back into a draft from here. The meta description goes into Yoast or Rank Math when the site allows it — install the [WordPress plugin](/docs/wordpress-plugin) to make sure.

## Common questions

**Why is the score "not measured"?**
There are no terms yet: research has not run, or no competitor page could be read. Use **Retry reading · free**.

**Which languages are supported?**
Articles can be written in English, Bulgarian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Polish, Dutch and Portuguese with full templates. Other languages use the competitors' headings and the model's writing.

**Does the draft include prices or facts about my business?**
No invented ones. Placeholders like "[price]" mark what you must fill.

**Can clients edit articles?**
Clients can read and download. Creating, editing and paid actions are for the agency.
